Alaska is home to breathtaking landscapes, untamed wildlife, and the amazing Matanuska Glacier. Stretching over 27 miles long, this natural wonder offers an unparalleled hiking experience. Whether you’re an experienced hiker looking to tackle the ice or a beginner eager to take in the views, hiking the Matanuska Glacier is perfect for every adventurer. In this guide we will walk through everything you need to know to make your glacier hiking experience unforgettable.
Preparing for Your Hiking Adventure
Before you embark on the icy trails, gearing up appropriately is crucial for a great day. Start with dressing in layers; the weather can be unpredictable. Opt for moisture-wicking fabrics to keep you dry and ensure your outer layer is wind and waterproof for sudden weather changes. Your footwear is equally important – waterproof hiking boots with a good grip is needed to navigate the glacier safely.
Other important items to bring with are: a reusable water bottle, healthy snacks for powering up when finished, and a camera for taking beautiful pictures. Provided by the hiking company we went with was a helmet and microspikes, so we didn’t have to worry about that. Check with whatever company you go with on what is provided.

Guided Hike
To hike the Matanuska Glacier you are required to have a guide. We went with Glacier-Tours on the Matanuska. They had everything planned out perfectly so we could really enjoy our time out on the glacier. Our guide not only provided safety insights but also enriched the experience with stories and facts about the glacier which was very interesting.
If you go with the game company, start they day by checking in at the main building at your chosen hike time. It’s best to contact them and book in advance to make sure you get preferred time. After checking in, we followed the road quite a ways back to their setup near the glacier. Inside we were fitted with a proper helmet and told about the safety procedures. We started out hiking on a dirt like trail and as we got closer to the ice we geared up with microspikes. They have all sizes to fit everyone’s foot size.
Next comes the amazing part, stepping onto the ice. We were lead all over the glacier with our guide and small tour group. The views were unreal and almost like stepping into a new world. We were able to even fill up our water bottle with fresh running water from the ice. After spending a good chunk of time on the glacier we were lead back to the building and to our car. It was such an amazing experience!

Other Ways to View The Glacier
As above, our choice to view this amazing glacier was by hiking on it. There are a couple other options such as taking a helicopter ride over the top. I’m sure those views are incredible! You can even choose to take a landing in a more remote location farther back on the glacier. Another challenging option is to do some ice climbing. This can be quite strenuous so prepare wisely.
Choose what ever option you see fit for you and your group. Some factors that may help you decided is cost and who is in your group. A helicopter ride would be amazing, but also the most expensive option. Think of who is in your group and how athletic everyone is. Kids are normally not permitted to do ice climbing. Anyway you choose to experience this glacier will be one to last with you for a lifetime.

Extra Information
How do I to get to the glacier? The glacier is located about 2 hours from Anchorage. Your best options are to either rent a car and drive or to take an organized tour out of Anchorage with transportation. We decided to stay in Palmer which is a little closer.
How much time does it take? Plan to spend about 2-3 hours with this hiking experience. It all depends on the current conditions and how fast your group is.
What other things are in the area? There are endless other hiking opportunities or cruise and enjoy the scenic Glenn Highway. We were able to see a moose right off the side of the road! If it happens to be warmer when you are visiting, check out river rafting or a 4 wheeler tour around the area.
